Police in Morganton say a man shot and killed himself during a traffic stop Sunday evening.
Morganton Department of Public Safety Officers were dispatched around 10:30 pm to the area of West Fleming Drive near South Sterling Street for a suspected impaired driver. The driver pulled into the parking lot on Fleming Drive.
As officers started their driving-while-impaired investigation, the driver retrieved a gun from his vehicle and fired it toward himself, resulting in a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The driver was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries.
No other details including the deceased’s name has been released.
