Statesville Police Seeking Suspect Charged In Fatal Accident

March 8, 2023 By Richard C. Gilbert

The Statesville Police Department is searching for a man in connection with a fatal crash.

Gabino Hernandez Nunez

The Statesville Police Department has obtained warrants charging 30-year old Gabino Hernandez Nunez with felony death by motor vehicle, two counts of felony serious injury by motor vehicle, driving without an operator’s license and reckless driving to endanger.
The charges stem from a crash that occurred about 12:23 a.m. on February 24 near the intersection of E. Broad Street and Cynthia Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered a red 1995 Honda Civic and a 2007 Honda Civic were involved in a head-on collision.

Nunez, who was driving the 1995 Honda, was transported to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem by Iredell County EMS personnel. The driver of the 2007 Honda Civic was also transported to Wake Forest Baptist Hospital by Iredell EMS. Both passengers of the 1995 Honda Civic were airlifted to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.

During the investigation, it was determined that Nunez was traveling east on East Broad Street when his vehicle crossed over the center line and struck the other vehicle head on.

Officers later determined that Nunez was under the influence and impaired at the time of the collision, and he was subsequently charged with Driving While Impaired.
On February 26, Juvencio Mata Carbajal, one of the passengers of the 1995 Honda Civic, succumbed to his injuries.

Anyone with information of the whereabouts of Nunez is asked to contact Statesville Police at (704) 878-3406.
