Statesville Man Pleads Guilty To Voluntary Manslaughter

October 24, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

Tyrell Dontaye Daniels

A Statesville man has pleaded guilty to an Iredell County shooting that killed a 20-year-old from Hickory in 2021.

Tyrell Dontaye Daniels, 34, pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in the death of 20-year-old Zion Trayshun Gaither during Iredell County Superior Court on Tuesday.

Daniels was sentenced to up to seven years and nine months in prison.

On June 8, 2021, Gaither was in a car with two other men when a shootout occurred along Williams Road in west Statesville. According to court documents, one of the occupants in the vehicle reached out to Daniels. The man and Daniels had a previous disagreement and the meetup was intended to quash any negative feelings. The meeting was an ambush.

Daniels fled the scene and was apprehended roughly three months later in Georgia.
