Statesville Man Killed In Morning Mishap

May 23, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

Statesville – On Thursday, May 23, at approximately 1:40 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Iredell County on I-77 North near mile marker 56. A 2012 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling north on I-77, failed to adequately reduce speed, and collided with a northbound 1998 International box truck.

The driver of the motorcycle, Dustin Kyle Pope, 35, of Statesville, was ejected from the motorcycle and succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The driver of the box truck, Ruben Reyna Anorve, 45, of Charlotte, was not injured.

The initial investigation indicates excessive speed to be the contributing factor in the collision. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
