GRANITE FALLS – The N.C. Department of Transportation has reopened a road this week after a contractor installed a roundabout near two Caldwell County schools.
Pinewood Road near Bert Huffman Road reopened Wednesday afternoon with a new roundabout at the intersection just in time for students to return to nearby Granite Falls Elementary and South Caldwell High School. Crews from Vannoy & Sons Construction started the project, designed to improve driver safety in the area, in June.
A crash study revealed 66 crashes along Pinewood Road – including nine at the intersection of Bert Huffman Road – in seven years.
NCDOT crash data has shown roundabouts decrease fatal and injury crashes by 76%, reduce frontal-impact crashes by 75% and total crashes by 46%.
The intersection remains under construction. Drivers should slow down, follow any posted signage and directions from law enforcement and flaggers in the area.
