It’s Toilet Paper Appreciation Day. TP was first sold in the United States on this day in 1857. Scott began selling the precious product on a roll in 1871

December 8, 1857 was when it was first sold in the US by Joseph C. Gayetty. The other observance is on August 26 when Scott first sold toilet paper on a roll on August 26, 1871

1863: President Abraham Lincoln announced his plan for the Reconstruction of the South

1941: The United States entered World War II when it declared war against Japan. The act came one day after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Britain and Canada also declared war on Japan

1962: Workers at four (later it would be nine) New York City newspapers went on strike. They would remain on strike for 114 days

1980: John Lennon is murdered by Mark David Chapman in front of his New York City aparment building

1984. A jury in Virginia found Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt innocent of libeling Reverend Jerry Falwell with a parody advertisement. Falwell was awarded $200,000 for emotional distress

1995: The surviving members of the Grateful Dead announced they were disbanding. Jerry Garcia had died the previous August
