Pedestrian Struck And Killed Sunday Morning In Wilkes County

June 30, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

A pedestrian was struck and killed by a motor vehicle early Sunday morning in Wilkes County.

The accident was reported shortly after 3am at the intersection of Addison Avenue and U.S. 421 in Wilkesboro. The name of the victim has not been released.

A man has been arrested after hitting a fire truck that was helping to divert traffic from the crash scene.

The fire department was called to assist in diverting traffic onto Winkler Mill Road. Around 5:26 a.m., as crews worked to move traffic from the first crash, police said a driver failed to turn onto Winkler Mill Road and “t-boned” the passenger side of a fire truck.

The driver was not hurt in the crash and no firefighters were in the vehicle at the time of the collision.

The driver was arrested for driving while impaired, failure to reduce speed, and additional traffic violations. There is no information on the identity of the driver, however, police said the investigation is ongoing at this time.
