February 6, 2023 By Richard C. Gilbert

LINCOLNTON – On Saturday, February 4, at approximately 6:15 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Lincoln County on NC 27 near Asbury Church Road. A 2008 Nissan Rogue was traveling west on NC 27, struck a pedestrian walking in the roadway, and then struck a 2008 GMC Sierra in the roadway.

The pedestrian, Charles Preston Long, 82, of Lincolnton was critically injured and transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he succumbed to his injuries the following day.

The driver of the Nissan, Donna Barringer, 66, of Iron Station, was not injured.

The initial investigation does not indicate impairment to be a contributing factor. Charges are pending upon completion of the ongoing investigation and consultation with the Lincoln County District Attorney’s Office. NC 27 was closed in the area for approximately two hours during the on-scene investigation.
