One Killed Friday Morning When Train Collides With Car In Hickory

One person was killed and two others were injured when a Norfolk Southern freight train collided with a vehicle early Friday morning.

The collision occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the railroad crossing on 17th Street. Police said the train struck the passenger side of a Cadillac SUV and pushed the vehicle from Hickory into Long View. Three people were inside the vehicle. One passenger died at the scene. A second passenger was transported to a hospital in Charlotte, while the driver was taken to a local hospital. Their conditions have not been released.

Norfolk Southern reported that none of the train’s crew members were injured.

Hickory Police said the railroad crossing arms were operating properly when the collision occurred. Authorities have not said why the vehicle was on the tracks.

Criminal charges are pending, but police have not announced what charges will be filed or who will face them. The names of the driver and passengers have not been released. The investigation remains ongoing, anyone with information is asked to contact the Hickory Police Department, Sargent Amanda Efird at 828-328-5551.
