Newton Woman Sentenced To Prison For 2024 Fatal Crash In Alexander County

A Newton woman has been given active prison time related to a fatal 2022 crash in Alexander County.

29-year old Cierra Leshay Jones was convicted on August 12th in Alexander County Superior Court. She was sentenced to serve (80-118 months) 64-89 months for felony death by vehicle and an additional 16-29 months for driving while impaired.

Shortly before 8pm on May 22nd, 2022, Jones was traveling north on Highway 127 in Bethlehem. According to the NC Highway Patrol, Jones crossed the centerline and struck a 2008 Totoya Prius head-on. 66-year old James Wallace Thompson of Wilkesboro, was taken to the Frye Regional Medical Center in Hickory where he died. Four passengers in the Prius, including three children suffered non life-threatening injuries.

The mishap happened within sight of the Alexander County EMS base on Highway 127.
