Newton Man Killed In Catawba County Accident

September 12, 2022 By Richard C. Gilbert

A Catawba County man was killed in a crash Friday afternoon. The deceased is 25-year-old Tyoun Jason Martise Shuford of Newton.

On Friday at approximately 1:30 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to Startown Road near Settlemyre Bridge Road in Catawba County. A 2017 Dodge Charger was traveling south on Startown Road, ran off the roadway to the right in a curve, overcorrected, crossed the centerline, ran off the road to the left, and overturned several times.

The driver, Tyoun Jason Martise Shuford, was not restrained by a seatbelt and was ejected. He was transported from the scene by EMS but passed away a short time later.

The initial investigation indicates excessive speed as a contributing factor in the collision.
