Morganton Man Dies After Exchanging Gunfire With Law Enforcement

June 13, 2022 By Richard C. Gilbert

A Morganton man has died after exchanging gunfire with law enforcement officers Sunday afternoon in Caldwell County.

35-year old Jerome Lavon Connelly was pronounced dead at Frye Regional Medical Center Hospital in Hickory after he was shot following a crash on U.S. 321 in Sawmills.

Caldwell County Deputies and State Highway Patrol Troopers responded to report of a car overturned Sunday afternoon. Prior to their arrival calls were received that a man was armed with multiple weapons at the crash scene. One of the callers reported the person said someone would die if police came to the crash.
A Deputy and a Trooper exchanged gunfire with a subject near the crash scene.

Reports say the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation searched the wrecked car and found a “significant” amount of illegal narcotics.

The deputy and trooper involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave pending review by the district attorney’s office.
