A McDowell County principal and assistant principal were injured after being assaulted by a high school student last week.
On Friday, May 31, the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office took a report of an assault that took place at McDowell High School in Marion. Authorities say School Resource Officers (SROs) were alerted by high school staff of a student assaulting the high school principal and an assistant principal after the student was confronted about a school violation. That violation was related to the student being in use of a vaping product. The school system says the victims were Principal Melora Bennett and Assistant Principal Lori Poteat.
The SRO immediately secured the student.
As a result of the attack, both staff members were treated for injuries and later released. The sheriff’s office said that the information and evidence were collected by the SROs, and the case has been turned over to North Carolina Juvenile Justice.
