This past Saturday (March 2), shortly after 3 p.m., Morganton Public Safety officers responded to Lowe’s Home Improvement on Burkemont Avenue in reference to a larceny. During the investigation it was revealed that Jonathan Wesley Mays had allegedly stolen items from inside the store.
When an employee from Lowe’s approached Mays it was reported that he drew a pistol from his waistband. When the firearm was seen by the employee they retreated as Mays got into a vehicle and left the scene. The Morganton Public Safety Criminal Investigations Division was contacted and continued the investigation.
On Monday (March 4), a warrant was issued on Mays for the robbery charge by Morganton Public Safety Criminal Investigations. The warrant was served by the Lenoir Police Department. Mays was initially jailed in the Caldwell County Detention Center then later transferred to the Burke County Jail. As of earlier today (March 6), he was being held in that facility under a $100,000 secured bond. A District Court date is scheduled Thursday (March 7).
