The Lady Cougars recovered from a sluggish first half and advanced to the Tournament Final. AC trailed 19-13 at the half but got a big performance from point guard Malaya Adams who scored 17 points and Meredith Wike who was clutch making 5 straight free-throws in the final minute. Wike collected 18 points to lead Alexander Central’s scoring. The Lady Cougars (8-2) will try to win the event for the third-straight season on Monday vrs Newton-Conover.
Men’s Losers Bracket
Alexander Central 63 Bunker Hill 50Hickory: Alexander Central Junior Jayon Connor set a new Dick’s Sporting Goods Classic single-game scoring record with his 42 point performance Saturday afternoon. Connor was 17-23 from the field (1-3 from three) and 7 of 8 from the free-throw line. He also pulled down 9 rebounds. The previous record for men was 35 set by Julius Powell of Newton Conover in 2002. The women’s record is 40 set in 2015 by Caleigh Raby of South Caldwell.
By virtue of their opening-round loss, ACHS will play Monday for 5th place. The Cougars are 5-6 on the season. Bunker Hill slides to 0-11.
