A historic church in Ashe County was destroyed by fire Sunday morning.
The fire at Grassy Creek Community Church broke out just before 10 am. Officials say that when firefighters arrived, they found the church already engulfed in flames, with fire coming from the windows and roof.
The blaze started in the furnace room and has been ruled accidental.
The Grassy Creek Community Church dates back to 1904. The building stood only about 300 feet away from the North Carolina-Virginia state line.
