A former chicken house was destroyed by fire Thursday afternoon in Alexander County.
Units from Hiddenite, Stony Point, Vashti, Trinity (Iedell County) along with the NC Forest Service were dispatched to Charlie Lackey Road around 4:30 pm. The building was fully engulfed when the first firefighters arrived.
According to Alexander County Fire Marshall Chris Hicks, the building was no longer in operation and was used for storing hay. He estimated that around 500 bales were charred. The structure had no electricity.
The fire spread into the nearby wooded area and around a half acre was damaged.
Hicks says the investigation in ongoing.
