October 7, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

Newton– On Monday, October 7, at approximately 8:50 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Catawba County on US 321 Business near Smyre Farm Road. A 2018 Nissan Rogue traveling south on US 321 Business drove off the right side of the road and collided with a tree.

The driver, Jimmie Earl Yancey, 83, of Maiden, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The preliminary investigation indicates speed and alcohol were not contributing factors in the collision. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately two hours.
