And so it begins !
Nearly a month after the project was expected to begin, the turf and track project is underway at Alexander Central’s Glenn Wilson Field at Cougar Stadium.
A state grant of $2.5 million is being used to install a new state of the art synthetic playing surface and a new 8-lane track. The money is part of $62.8 million dollars statewide that lawmakers set aside in the last year’s state budget for athletic upgrades at schools. The Alexander County Board of Education approved a contract on June 5th with the understanding that the work would be completed in time for the opening Football game of the season which is August 23rd vrs longtime rival Statesville. The project will also include an eight-lane track, a new high jump, two long jump/triple jump pits, and a new pole vault runway and pit. The expansion will allow AC to host bigger track meets with more teams
GeoSurfaces, out of Mooresville began the process of removing the old grass surface Monday morning.
Since Track and Field are primarily Spring events, emphasis will be on the turf instillation for now.
A spokesperson for GeoSurfaces said Monday that he’s confident the field will be ready for Football and Soccer in time for the Fall Athletic Season.
