LENOIR – On Tuesday, February 21, at approximately 5:05 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Caldwell County on Valway Road near US 321. A 2004 Hyundai Accent was traveling south Valway Road, crossed the center line, ran off the highway to the left, and collided with a tree.
The driver of the Hyundai, Jonathon Irineo Betancourt, 24, of Conover, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Betancourt was not restrained by a seatbelt. The preliminary investigation indicates speed as a contributing circumstance in the collision.
