Catawba County Crash Ends With Crash On Highway 16

The driver of a vehicle involved in a Catawba County chase Monday morning was injured after he struck a power pole north of Conover.

Shortly after 9am, Catawba County Sheriff’s Deputies pursued of a car that was reported stolen in Conover. During the chase Christopher Mark Simmons, 32, backed into a deputy’s patrol vehicle causing minor damage. The deputy was not injured.

Simmons continued to flee and then crashed into a power pole along Highway 16 North near C and B Farm Road. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injures.

Simmons is charged with assault with a deadly weapon on a government official and felony speeding to elude a law enforcement officer. He was also served with a long list of pending arrest warrants. Simmons is being held in the Catawba County Detention Center with a secured bond of $174,000.
