MORGANTON – On Monday, March 3, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Burke County on I-40 West near NC 18 (Mile Marker 105). A 2016 Hyundai Sonata traveling east in the westbound lanes, collided with a 2022 Ford Mustang.
The driver of the Sonata, Carolyn Calhoun Cooper, 76, of Morganton, succumbed to her injuries at the scene.
The driver of the Mustang, Landon Keith Norris, 23, of Newton, was critically injured and transported by medical helicopter to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center, in Charlotte.
The initial investigation does not indicate speed or impairment to be contributing factors in the collision. No charges will be filed in this case. During the on-scene investigation, the roadway was closed in the area for approximately three hours.
