Burke County Man Dies In Prison

A Burke County man died in prison on Saturday.

Kyle Blackburn Brown, 38, of Morganton, was found unresponsive in his cell at Granville Correctional Institution around 7:44 a.m. on Aug. 17, according to Brad Deen, a public information officer for the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. The prison is in Butner.

Prison staff attempted life-saving measures, but Granville County EMS pronounced him dead at 8:17 a.m.
Brown’s cause of death is undetermined, Deen said. Law enforcement and the NC Office of the Chief Medical Examiner are investigating the death which is precedure for in-custody deaths.

Brown was 11 days into a sentence for two counts of trafficking a schedule I controlled substance in Burke County when he died, according to Department of Correction records. His sentence started Aug. 6, and he was sentenced to a minimum of 15 years in prison between the two counts.
