Burke County Man Charged With Assaulting Firefighter

On January 16, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office responded to Spaniel Street in Connelly Springs regarding an assault on a firefighter. Deputies spoke with the victim and learned that while preparing to extinguish an outside fire near a wood line, a black male approached and grabbed the firehose. While attempting to regain control of the firehouse, the black male struck the fireman on the side of the head with a closed fist and ran from the scene.

Deputies were unable to locate the suspect.

On January 21, the Burke County Sheriff’s Office, in coordination with Probation and Parole Officers, conducted a follow-up on Spaniel Street in Connelly Springs regarding an outstanding arrest warrant for 37-year-old Leevon Monroe Ussery. Warrants were issued for Assault with Physical Injury on Emergency Personnel charge, along with multiple probation violations.

Ussery was located and taken into custody without incident. He was subsequently transported to the Burke County Magistrate’s Office, where the outstanding warrants were formally served. He received an $80,000.00 secured bond, and his first appearance was on January 22.
