Did you hear the Boom last night ?
Around 8pm a loud boom was heard by residents in Southern Alexander County along Church Road to Stony Point in the east. Alexander County 911 received calls about a possible explosion that one caller stated “it shook my home.”
The Alexander County Sheriff’s Office was unable to find any trace of an explosion but for certain it was loud and heard by many.
One speculation is that a jet aircraft might have broken the sound barrier causing a sonic boom.
Update:
Another possible explanation and perhaps more a more likely one is the use of Tannerite. The product is a brand of binary explosive targets used for firearms practice and sold in kit form. The targets comprise a combination of oxidizers and a fuel, primarily aluminium powder, that is supplied as two separate components that are mixed by the user. The mixture is ignited by shooting a high-velocity bullet into the mixture.
According to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tannerite the product is not regulated by the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms (ATF), it and can be transported and sold in many places without the legal restrictions.
Alexander County Sheriff Chad Pennell said this morning that he feels the use of Tannerite was what caused the boom be he’s a bit surprised that it could have caused such an explosion heard over such a wide-area.
Deputies attempted to locate where such a blast might have originated but were unable to locate any evidence Monday evening.
