Multiple Alexander County Fire Departments and a unit from Catawba County responded to a fire in the Wittenburg Community this morning. Firefighters were called to McAlpin Lane to a chicken house fire. For the second time in about a week, a poultry operation avoided disaster thanks to some luck and some outstanding work by firefighters.
County Fire Marshall Russell Greene said this morning the house had been cleared of birds recently and was expecting to be stocked next week. The house had been cleaned and the floor had been covered with a new shipment of wood shavings. Those shavings stared smoldering overnight and sent a significant amount of smoke across the area. The building sustained some damage due to the flames but the structure is totally intact according to Greene.
Ellendale, Wittenburg, Behtlehem, Taylorsville, Hiddenite, Sugar Loaf, Vashti, and Stony Point departments all responded. The Oxford Fire Department from Catawba County also provided manpower. The Fire Marshall’s Office is investigating what caused the fire.
