Alexander Senior Center Director Kristy Hunt has completed the Ann Johnson Institute for Senior Center Management program, a three-year leadership training initiative offered through the N.C. Division of Aging.
The program is designed to strengthen leadership and management skills among senior center directors across the state through six training modules covering topics such as leadership development, staff supervision, communication, and community engagement.
Hunt attended all six modules during the three-year cycle, joining senior center professionals from across North Carolina to share ideas and learn new approaches to serving older adults.
“There are six modules to complete, and if you stay on track, it takes about three years to finish the program,” Hunt said. “It was a big commitment, but I enjoyed every module. It really challenges you to think about leadership, how you support your staff, and how senior centers can continue adapting to meet the needs of our seniors.”
Hunt said one of the most valuable aspects of the experience was connecting with peers across the state.
“You realize pretty quickly that many centers face the same challenges,” she said. “Being able to share ideas, hear what’s working in other communities, and build those relationships was incredibly helpful.”
The program is named for Ann Johnson, a longtime advocate for older adults who helped establish one of North Carolina’s first senior centers and played a key role in advancing senior services statewide.
David Moose, Alexander County Consolidated Human Services Director, said Hunt’s completion of the program reflects her commitment to local seniors.
“Kristy is deeply dedicated to the older adults in our community,” Moose said. “Programs like the Ann Johnson Institute help leaders bring new ideas back to their centers, and that ultimately benefits the people we serve. Kristy does a wonderful job, and our seniors love her enthusiasm.”
