Undefeated and coming off a Holiday Tournament Championship, Alexander Central’s women suffered their first loss of the season Friday night in Taylorsville.
Ashe County trailed at half 19-15 but dominated the second half 44-26. Abby Sheets went 8 of12 from the field including 3 of 4 from beyond the arc for 20 points to lead the visitors from West Jefferson. Paige Overcash added 14.
ACHS was led by Sydney Hayes with 12, no other Lady Cougar reached double figures. AC suffered 21 turnovers. Alexander loses the league opener and drops to 12-1. Ashe County improves to 1-0 and 10-3

The Cougars led wire to wire handing Coach Ed Wills his 275th career win. They were up 13 to 5 after the first quarter although Ashe County trailed only 19-16 at the half.
Avery Cook led the Blue and Gold scoring with 21. He was 8 of 11 shooting (3 for 6 from behind the three-point line). The Cougars out rebounded the visitors 28-18. Jake Grubb had 23 points including 5 three-point baskets to pace the Huskies.
The win improves Alexander Central to 9-4 and 1-0 in Northwestern Conference play. Ashe County is 6-8 and 0-1.
