West Jefferson: The trio of Meredith Wike, Ava Head and Faith Birch combined for 48 points as Alexander Central defeated Ashe County Friday night.
Wike had 17 points and 15 rebounds, Head produced 16 points including 4-three-pointers, and Birch had 15. AC led 26-23 at half but pulled away with a 22-16 third quarter. Abby Sheets had 23 points for Ashe County who drops to 9-10 overall and 0-6 in the Northwestern Conference. The Lady Cougars improve to 13-7 and 3-3.

Jayon Connor poured-in 28 points and grabbed 12 rebounds in the rout. The lead changed hands 7 times in the first half as the Blue and Gold led by 23-17 at the half. The third quarter saw Alexander Central out pace Ashe 19-5. Bryce Peters led the Huskies with 15 points.
With the win, the Cougars are 10-9 and 4-2 in league play. Ashe County falls to 6-11 and 1-5.
