On Thursday, January 16, 2025, around 3:15 a.m., Iredell County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a reported shooting at the intersection of Wiggins Road and Mount Ulla Highway. Upon arrival, Deputies located a victim with a gunshot wound to the lower abdomen. The suspect had fled the scene. Iredell County EMS provided medical assistance, and the victim was transported to the hospital after a brief interview. The investigation revealed the shooting stemmed from a domestic dispute, and the victim and suspect were known to each other.
Detectives and Crime Scene Investigators gathered evidence, conducted interviews, and concluded that the suspect, John Dexter Wines, 33, had followed the victim’s vehicle, blocked it at an intersection, and initiated an altercation. During this confrontation, Wines shot the victim with a handgun before fleeing in the direction of Rowan County.
Investigators discovered Wines was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitor due to prior domestic violence charges but had removed it while fleeing by cutting it off. Arrest warrants have been issued.
The investigation is ongoing, and additional charges may follow.
