Ashe County 36…overtime
Taylorsville: The Cougars won on the 50th anniversary of the first game ever played at Cougar Stadium but it took a while longer than expected over a stubborn Ashe County team.
Cameron Lackey scored from 10 yards in overtime and Ashe County failed to answer in the extra period giving Alexander Central the school’s 300th all-time win.
Ashe County scored on a Wesley Thompson to Cesar Martinez 30-yard pass with 5:25 left in regulation , the Huskies added a two-point conversion to tie the game. Thompson was 28-45 for 317 yards and 5 touchdown passes to lead the visitors.
Cameron Lackey scored two touchdown and ran for 217 yards, Andrew Bumgarner added 183 yards and a score. The Cougars out gained Ashe County 475-428.
Russel Frasier led the Cougar defense with 10 tackles including 2 stops for loss.
AC improves to 4-2, 1-0 in Northwestern Conference play. Ashe County drops to 1-4 and 0-1.
Next Friday, Alexander Central travels to Boone to battle Watauga.
