Officers with the Gwinnett County, Georgia Sheriff’s Office found a man, later identified as Shane Meyerhoffer, 27, of Hays. He had sustained a single gunshot wound and was found alongside a roadway.
In 2019, Meyerhoffer pleaded guilty in Wilkes Superior Court to involuntary manslaughter for the stabbing death of Anthony Wayne Sheppard. The incident occurred in the Hays community. Meyerhoffer was sentenced to not less than 17 nor more than 30 months in prison. Meyerhoffer was given credit for 703 days in the Wilkes County Jail awaiting trial and released after sentencing.
In July 2019, Meyerhoffer was tried for first-degree murder in the case, but a mistrial was declared by the Judge after jurors were unable to agree on a verdict.
At the time of his death, Meyerhoffer was awaiting trial on several counts of trafficking in methamphetamine in Wilkes County.
