January 28, 2026 By Richard C. Gilbert

A man was rescued Tuesday afternoon after he slipped and fell about 80 feet down an ice-covered, steep slope in a pasture off Lump Road in northwestern Wilkes County.

Millers Creek Fire & Rescue and Wilkes Emergency Medical Services were dispatched about 2:45 p.m. Tuesday after relatives found the man and called 911. Other agencies assisted including units from Ashe County.

The elderly man is reported to have sustained multiple injures to a hip and some possible broken ribs.
