Wilkes County Man Charged With Friday Murder

The Wilkes County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred Friday afternoon in Hays.

Emergency personnel were dispatched to 304 Montieth Acres Road in Hays in response to a call about a man shooting a woman while she was in a vehicle. The woman died at the scene.

Information received by the Wilkes Communications Center indicated that a white male in a gray Nissan Altima fired one round . Additional information revealed that a U.S. Postal Service vehicle was involved. Neighbors reported hearing multiple gunshots.

An AirCare helicopter was dispatched and then cancelled. The Wilkes Emergency Medical Services and Mountain View Fire Department first responders were dispatched and responded to the scene.

William Craig Durham, 56, of Boss Blackburn Road, Roaring River, is charged with first-degree murder and first-degree kidnapping.

The victim is identified as Brandi Byrd Reynolds.

Durham is being held in the Wilkes County Jail without bond, with a first appearance set for Monday in Wilkes District Court.
