Taylorsville: Alexander Central led early but Watauga again, was Watauga.
After holding the visiting Pioneers to a three and out on their first possession, AC drove it 66 yards in 9 plays, capped by a Jeremiah Whitaker 3-yard-run. Aiden Daigle added the extra-point and Homecoming had the looks of a big success for the Blue and Gold.
ACHS recovered an on-side kick at the Watauga 49 but failed to make any progress, then Watauga became Watauga.
The visitors went 80 yards in 8 plays culminating with Matthew Leon’s 1-yard run. The game was tied and Watauga started to take over with a short passing game the Cougars had no answer for. The Pioneers would lead 21-7 at halftime.
Meredith Wike was crowned as the Alexander Central Homecoming Queen and Malayah Adams the Princess during the halftime festivities.
In the third quarter the Cougars received the kick and marched 65 yards on 13 plays. The drive chewed 8:08 off the clock, capped by 24-yard run by QB Jaheim Redmond. AC was down 21-14.
The Watauga became Watauga.
Evan Burroughs caught a pair of touchdown passes from QB Cade Keller and Bowen Mayo made a sensational grab from 29-yards for another score. The score exploded to 42-14.
The Cougars would get an 11-yard run for score from Jaheim Redmond with 21 seconds remaining making the final score 42-20.
QB Cade Keller was spot-on for Watauga going 15-17 for 229 yards and 3 touchdown passes. The Pioneers had 290 yards of offense. AC would rush for 183 led by Jaquis Parks with 72 on 12 carries. The Cougar pass game could muster only 65 yards.
The win improves the Watauga record to 8-0 and 3-0 in Northwestern Conference play.
Alexander Central drops to 2-6 and 1-2.
