The State Bureau of Investigation is investigating a fatal officer involved shooting that occurred Friday morning on Miller Hill Road in Lenoir.
The deputy was responding to a call of a suspicious person. Sheriff Alan Jones says when the deputy arrived, he saw the man standing in the middle of the roadway. As the deputy exited the patrol car, the suspect approached the deputy and a confrontation ensued. That’s when officials say the deputy fired his weapon and the man was killed. The man has been identified as 28-year-old Timothy Sides Jr.
The deputy was wearing a body camera and the SBI is reviewing the video as part of the investigation.
Officials say Sides had a handgun at the time of the shooting. Sides had a long criminal history including assault, felony larceny, possession of a firearm and more. He served several stints in prison including one for probation violation. He was released from prison last summer after serving time on that conviction.
The deputy involved was not injured and is on paid administrative leave while the investigation continues. The SBI findings will be turned over to the the District Attorney’s Office. No timetable has been set for that.
The name of the deputy has not been released.
