An Iredell County man died in a crash Friday night near the Union Grove Fire Department.
60-year old Robert Douglas Shumate of Union Grove was pronounced dead at the scene according to the North Carolina Highway Patrol.
A Patrol report indicates Shumate was a right front seat passenger in a Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven by 27-year old Cheyanne Pardue. Another passenger was injured in the crash.
The truck was traveling east on N.C. 901 and ran off the road to the right, striking a mailbox. The vehicle then went back onto the road and ran off to the left, hitting a ditch and the large brick sign for the fire department.
The truck overturned and came to rest on its side in front of the fire department.
Pardue was charged with DWI and additional charges are forthcoming.
