Wilkes County Accident Results In Two Fatalities Monday Morning

Ronda – On Monday, November 17th, at approximately 8:00 a.m., the NC State Highway Patrol responded to and investigated a fatal collision in Wilkes County on Somers Road at the intersection of Hunting Creek Road. A 2024 Toyota RAV4 was traveling West on Hunting Creek Road. A 2006 Western Star tractor-trailer was traveling North on Somers Road. The Toyota failed to yield the right of way, and the vehicles collided in the intersection.

The driver of the Toyota RAV4, Aljon Salvador Aguelo, 34, of Durham, NC, succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Maricel Nano Aquino, 35 of Durham, NC, was a passenger in the Toyota RAV4 who succumbed to her injuries at the scene. She was not restrained by a seatbelt.

Two infant children who were also passengers in the Toyota RAV4 were transported by ground to Brenner’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, Blake Arden Graham, was not injured.

Somers Road was closed in the area for approximately three hours during the on-scene investigation. There is no indication of speed or alcohol contributing to the collision and no charges will be filed.
