Two encounters with foxes, one in which a man was attacked and the other in which a dog was attacked, occurred Saturday on the upper campus of Wilkes Community College.
On July 5th, Wilkesboro Police were already on campus in response to a fox attacking a large dog early in the day when they learned that a man was attacked by a fox in the same vicinity shortly after the dog was attacked. The fox that attacked the man was shot and killed by a Wilkesboro Police Officer. Wilkes Emergency Medical Services responded and provided medical assistance to the man who is now being treated for exposure to rabies.
Wilkes Animal Control responded and sent the head of the fox that was shot to a laboratory for testing. It wasn’t immediately clear if the animal was a gray fox or a red fox.
Wilkes Animal Control reported that two people walking on the Yadkin River Greenway east of West Park medical complex in North Wilkesboro were bitten by a rabid gray fox on the morning of Wednesday, June 11.
The fox bit two adults, a man and then a woman within 15 minutes while they were walking separately on the greenway. The fox was killed and tested positive for rabies.
