Update: Sunday, August 2nd. 1pm

Statesville, NC – On Friday, July 31, 2026, at approximately 9:14 p.m., the Statesville Police Department responded to a reported traffic crash involving a vehicle and a pedestrian at the intersection of S. Oakland Avenue and W. Garner Bagnal Boulevard.

Upon arrival, officers located an unresponsive pedestrian off the side of the roadway. Officers immediately initiated life saving measures until personnel from the Statesville Fire Department and Iredell County Emergency Medical Service arrived. Despite their efforts, the pedestrian was pronounced deceased at the scene. The victim was identified as Carla Donetta Nichols, 64, of Statesville, North Carolina.

The vehicle involved fled the scene prior to law enforcement’s arrival. The SPD Traffic Division responded and assumed the investigation.

The preliminary investigation determined that Ms. Nichols was walking north on S. Oakland Avenue while attempting to cross W. Garner Bagnal Boulevard when she was struck by a vehicle traveling westbound on W. Garner Bagnal Boulevard. The suspect vehicle left the scene without stopping.

During the investigation, traffic investigators obtained information indicating the suspect vehicle was possibly a small pickup truck that was red or dark in color. As investigators continued to pursue active leads, including the use of the department’s Flock Safety camera system, the vehicle was identified as a red 1998 Dodge Dakota with a dark colored hood registered to Gerald Dalbert Troutman, 72, of Troutman Farm Road in Statesville.

Further investigation identified the driver of the Dodge Dakota as Ginger Marie Dixon (Hall), 45, of Old Mountain Road in Statesville.

Traffic investigators located Dixon (Hall) and took her into custody. She was charged with Felony Hit and Run Causing Death and was transported before an Iredell County Magistrate, who issued her no bond. Additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.

The 1998 Dodge Dakota was located and seized as evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.

Based on the investigation conducted thus far, neither speed nor alcohol appears to be contributing factors in this incident.
