Statesville Police Charge Man After Fatal Accident

March 27, 2025 By Richard C. Gilbert

The Statesville Police Department is investigating a fatal motor vehicle collision that occurred on Tuesday, March 25, at approximately 10:09 p.m. The incident took place at the intersection of E. Broad Street and Eastside Drive and involved a Porsche SUV and a motorcycle.

According to the preliminary investigation, the Porsche Cayenne, driven by Henry Baker, 64, of Statesville, was traveling westbound on E. Broad Street and attempting to make a left-hand turn onto Eastside Drive. While Baker was in the left turn lane, a 2024 Kawasaki motorcycle, operated by Adela Portillo, 21, also of Statesville, entered the intersection. Baker failed to yield to oncoming traffic, and the front left corner of his vehicle struck Portillo’s motorcycle.

As a result of the collision, Portillo sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to Iredell Memorial Hospital. Despite all life-saving efforts, she succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival.
Further investigation revealed the presence of open containers inside the Porsche at the time of the collision.

On Wednesdy, March 26, a warrant for Baker’s arrest was issued. Baker was taken into custody at his residence without incident and has been charged with Misdemeanor Death by Motor Vehicle, Failure to Yield the Right of Way, and Possession of an Open Container After Consuming Alcohol. He was served with the arrest warrant and issued a $10,000 secured bond.

The Traffic Division of the Statesville Police Department is continuing a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision. Anyone with information that may assist in the investigation is urged to contact the division at 704-878-3406.
