Statesville Man Arrested On Felony Drug Charges

February 29, 2024 By Richard C. Gilbert

33-year old Charles Smith, Jr. Of Statesville was arrested Monday by Iredell County Sheriff’s Deputies. He’s charged with felony counts of possession of cocaine, possession of methamphetamine, and maintaining a vehicle for controlled substance. In addition, Smith is charged with misdemeanor counts of possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana paraphernalia. He’s also charged with driving while license revoked, displaying a fictitious tag, no liability insurance and failure to burn a taillight on a motorcycle.

A Deputy with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office saw a motorcycle traveling east on Salisbury Road with no working taillights and the female passenger not wearing a helmet. When the officer got behind the motorcycle, the driver reportedly made eye contact and accelerated at a high rate of speed.

The deputy conducted a traffic stop on the motorcycle on Old Salisbury Road. The driver of the motorcycle was identified as Charles Smith, Jr. It was discovered that he had a suspended driver’s license and the registration plate displayed on the rear of the motorcycle was found to be fictitious. During the traffic stop, a search resulted in the discovery of 2.71 grams of cocaine, 1.28 grams of meth and 3.28 grams of marijuana.

The female passenger of the motorcycle was issued a citation for failing to wear a helmet and released from the traffic stop. Smith had a first appearance on Tuesday (February 27) where a judge ordered him to be held on a $100,000 secured bond. He remained in jail as of earlier today (February 29). A District Court date is scheduled for March 18.
