It wasn’t the normal call for a couple heavy duty wrecker services Thursday Night. A 65,000 pound forklift ended up in the waters of Lake Hickory. Around 8:30 pm, units were dispatched to River’s Edge Marina off Icard Ridge Road in Bethlehem according to County Emergency Services Director Russell Greene.
When Bethlehem First Responders arrived on the scene they knew this was going to take a while. Greene says a massive forklift used to dry dock boats at the marinaapparently had a brake failure and rolled into the Lake. Greene says the forklift was unoccupied and “parked in the same location and in the same manner that’s it’s normally parked” SPLASH ! When the Brakes apparently gave way.
The big rig rolled toward the lake striking the dock and fuel pumps. Extensive damage was done to the dock but very minimal damage to the fuel pumps considering what might have been. Greene says “a very small amount of fuel spilled in the water”.
Now comes the clean up. Two Heavy duty wreckers were called to recover the forklift and even with the heavy equipment the operation lasted nearly two hours.
Today the clean up will continue.
