South Caldwell Too Much For Alexander Central

South Caldwell stormed by the Cougars Friday night in Taylorsville scoring 29 unanswered points after
Alexander Central had taken the lead early in the 3rd Quarter.

Spartan running back Jaxson Wilkerson scored 6 touchdowns and rushed for 212 yards for the visitors. South out gained the Cougars 373-244.

AC jumped on top 7-0 when Andrew Bumgarner scored from 11 yards with 5:42 remaining in the opening period. The Cougars would add another touchdown less than a minute later when safety Luke Mitchell picked off a South Caldwell pass and returned it 51 yards for a score. It was Mitchell’s first appearance of the season after suffering a pre-season injury. He would leave the game with an injury in the first quarter and was taken to an area medical facility

South would get a break when they recovered a fumble on the ACHS 14 yard line. In three plays Wilkerson would find the end zone from 2 yds, He would add another score from 9 yards with 6:43 remaining in the first half knotting the game at 14.

With 1:40 remaining in the 2nd quarter, Cougar QB Tanner Moore making his first varsity start, hit Daniel Specht from 21 yards to give the Blue and Gold a 21-14 lead. The Spartans would answer with another Wilkerson scamper from 8 yards with 40 seconds remaining in the half. The two-point conversion was good and the visitors took a 22-21 lead at the break.

The Cougars wrestled the lead back taking the ball 57 yards in 4 plays capped by a Logan Shoemaker 8 yard run, the conversion failed and AC led 27-22. Then the Cougars got overwhelmed by Wilkerson and the Spartans. South tallied 4 touchdowns to end the game and end a 5 game losing streak to the Cougars.

South improves to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in Northwestern Conference play. Alexander Central drops to 4-4 and 1-2.

Moore went 8-14 passing for 100 yards and a touchdown. He also threw an interception. The usually potent Cougar ground attack was held to only 144 yards rushing.

Alexander Central travels to Hibriten next Friday, South Caldwell goes to Ashe County.
