Wilkes County authorities responded to a call of shots fired in the parking lot of the Wilkes Family YMCA on Friday afternoon.
The initial report indicated that a fight in the men’s locker room led to a disturbance involving 10 men in their early 20s with shots being fired.
Wilkesboro Police Officers and Wilkes Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a call about the disturbance and secured the scene.
Wilkesboro Police released a statement saying, “This incident appears to have stemmed from an altercation between individuals who were in an earlier argument inside the YMCA, and it continued as they left the facility. We do not believe there is any further threat or danger of violence at the Wilkesboro YMCA as this incident was not directed at the facility or any staff members.”
A male subject has been taken into custody and charged with going armed to the terror of people and discharging a firearm in the city. Authorities have yet to identify the suspect.
