Richard C Gilbert’s Wednesday Blog

June 11, 2025 By Richard C. Gilbert

Wednesday, June 11. Day 162 of 2025

Two things I love. It’s Corn on the Cobb Day and German Chocolate Cake Day

1770: British explorer Captain James Cook discovers the Great Barrier Reef. In truth, he struck it

1895: Charles Duryea receives the first US patent for a Gasoline-driven automobile

1919: Sir Barton wins the Belmont Stakes, becoming the first horse to win the U.S. Triple Crown

1955: Eighty-three spectators are killed and at least 100 are injured after two cars collide at the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the deadliest ever accident in motorsports

1962: Frank Morris, John Anglin and Clarence Anglin allegedly become the only prisoners to escape from the prison on Alcatraz Island. I think Clint Eastwood made it to shore, not sure about the other two

1963: Governor of Alabama George Wallace defiantly stands at the door of Foster Auditorium at the University of Alabama in an attempt to block two black students from attending that school. Later in the day, accompanied by National Guard troops, they registered. Forrest Gump was witness to the whole thing

2001: Timothy McVeigh is executed for his role in the Oklahoma City bombing

2002: Sorry, Mr Bell but Congress declared Antonio Meucci as the “first inventor” of the telephone https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonio_Meucci

I’ve always thought singing (even if you’re not great) is good for you https://www.msn.com/en-us/health/wellness/why-singing-is-good-for-your-brain-even-if-you-are-no-beyonc%C3%A9/ar-AA1Gqrzu

Word of the Day: Svengali [ sven-gah-lee ] a person who dominates another, usually with selfish or sinister motives. First recorded in 1940’s after the evil hypnotist of the same name in the novel Trilby (1894) by George Du Maurier . “His actions resembled a Svengali and it was intended”

Quote of the Day: “The happiness of the bee and the dolphin is to exist. For man it is to know that and to wonder at it”… Jacques Cousteau (Born this day in 1910)
