1956: The world’s first commercial nuclear power station begins operation in Sellafield, England

1973: The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) began an oil-embargo against several countries including the U.S. and Great Britain. The embargo spiked gas prices and created a shortage that forced Americans to wait in line to buy gas when and if it was available
