On May 13, the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence on Brawley School Road after CPR was initiated on a three-month-old infant. The infant was transported to Duke Health Lake Norman Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.
Detectives investigated and collected evidence indicating the infant had lost approximately one-third of her body weight since birth and was suffering from severe malnourishment and dehydration. It was also determined the infant had not received necessary medical treatment despite significant signs of medical distress.
The infant’s parents, Kendal Lee Hayes and Glenn John Delgreco II, and grandparents, Alice Loraine Evans and Thomas Virgil Evans, were initially charged with Felony Child Abuse and Aiding and Abetting in connection with the investigation.
An autopsy later determined the infant’s cause of death was Severe Protein-Calorie Malnutrition due to Caregiver Neglect. The manner of death was ruled a Homicide.
On September 2, investigators presented the evidence and autopsy findings to the Iredell County Grand Jury, which indicted Hayes and Delgreco on charges of Felony First-Degree Murder.
On September 15, Hayes and Delgreco were served with the indictments at the Iredell County Detention Center where they are being held without bond
