A Hickory man was killed in a head-on collision Tuesday afternoon south of Taylorsville.
Around 1:30, a two-vehicle crash was reported on Highway 16 south about a quarter mile from the Oxford Dam Bridge. The North Carolina Highway Patrol says a 2002 Dodge Durango was traveling north on N.C. 16, crossed the centerline and collided head-on with a 1992 Toyota Camry in the southbound lane. The driver of the Toyota, 73-year old Steve Ray Yoder was pronounced dead at the scene. A passenger was airlifted to a regional medical facility with life-threatening injuries. The driver of the Dodge, Kevin Holloway, 51, of Claremont, and passenger Jerry Parson, 24, of Conover, were injured. The extent of their injuries have not been detailed.
The investigation is ongoing. Highway 16 was closed for hours as traffic was diverted from the crash site.
