Newton Police Searching For Suspect In Officer-Involved Shooting

Warrants have been issued for a suspect in an officer-involved shooting on Monday in Newton. Police were not notified before suspect was released from Baptist Hospital.

The Newton Police Department has charged 19-year-old Ahmon Jamir Henderson of Salisbury with two felony counts of second-degree burglary, one felony count of possession of a stolen firearm and one misdemeanor count of resisting a public officer. He’s also charged on warrants from Mecklenburg County with offenses including breaking or entering with intent to terrorize and assault by strangulation.

He’s wanted in connection to an incident earlier today. Shortly before 12 noon, the Newton Police Department received a 911 call regarding a possible trespassing incident at the Sandalwood Apartments, on Sandalwood Court in Newton. The caller reportedly knows the trespasser and told police that he was in possession of a gun.!Officers responded to the scene and conducted a search of the apartment but did not find the man.

Officers were then advised that the man fled the apartment and was hiding in a shed located behind the apartments. While officers were checking the area behind the apartments, a man exited one of the sheds and ran toward officers. During that encounter, one officer discharged their firearm, striking the man in the leg.

He was transported by EMS to a local hospital and later transferred to Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. No officers or other citizens were injured during this incident, and there is no ongoing threat to the community.

Henderson (pictured) is considered to be armed and dangerous. If you know of his whereabouts or see him, call 911.
